Feedback from Coach Janet's athletes...
|
"I
highly recommend using her for beginning, moderate or fast runners." I have
been working with Janet since the beginning of 2008. She has not only been able to keep me on the ground and away from previous
injuries, she is getting me stronger along the way. She has been able to tame my enthusiasm toward high mileage and teach
me other strength categories to focus on to contribute toward lowering my race times. Who would have thought at 43 this could
be done? I was curious and some what skeptical when I first started with Janet, because I had tried so many "theories"
to avoid injuries and lower your times. None were successful until I started working with her. I highly recommend using her
for beginning, moderate or fast runners. She is capable of meeting your needs. (CB 6/09)
"I couldn't
have asked for a better coach!" Janet is great to work with. She has been patient
as I have recovered from past injuries and has helped to strengthen me for races. She has been willing to work with me to
help me accomplish my goals. I couldn't have asked for a better coach! (BM 6/09)
"Training
that is customized for you, helped me set a PR at Boston!" I dropped 11:00 off my previous time at
the Boston Marathon and set a PR in the process. None of it would have happened without Janet. I've NEVER felt better at the
end of a marathon running a 3:00 neg. split. A runner asked me near the halfway point what kind of "fade" I planned
on, and thanks to Janet's help, I could confidently answer, "None!" The best part of this training is that
is customized for YOU and she will take your personal strengths and opportunities for improvement into consideration. With her help, I have undergone a complete shift in how I view my running and I've learned a lot. She is strategic in how
she will push you. I was literally miles ahead of any previous training with strong basebuilding, pinpointed speedwork and
precise pace running. I also can count on speedy response time if I have questions. I give her my highest recommendation!
(JW, 6/09) "I will no longer use anyone else!" Janet is a
great running coach. She has helped me recover from 3 running injuries now! I have been to chiropractors, medical doctors,
accupuncturists, etc...no one beats the expertise of Janet. I will no longer use anyone else! (KG, 6/09) "Seeing a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel" In January of 2009, I
went out for my long run thinking nothing of it and at mile 2 felt some pain and at mile 14 could not walk. After a visit
to the ER and soon after an MRI, I was diagnosed with two sacral stress fractures. This was devastating news as I have been
a long distance runner for 20 years and have never had an injury. After 6 weeks, I decided to see if I could find someone
who could provide me with advice and found Janet Hamilton. At the time, I asked her when she thought I would be back on the
road and she told me these types of injuries are very serious and it is typically a minimum of 6 months. I must admit, my
instinct was to find someone else who would tell me it would take 8 weeks and moved on. Well, 5 months later, still
in serious pain, I went to my primary care physician who told me to run and put ice on it and a sports medicine doctor who
told me to come back in a month and he would give me a cortisone shot. I did not think either of these recommendations were
sound and remembered that I had reached out to Janet back in February and got advice that I did not like but was dead on.
So, I contacted her again and once again she provided sage advice and offered help if I wanted it. I was lost and in pain
and frustrated and recognized that she was the only one being truly honest but also encouraging at the same time and had incredible
depth of experience working with folks with injuries like mine. She did an amazing and thorough analysis of my overall
health and identified all of the numerous issues I needed to address, including the stress fractures, history of anorexia
and contracting with a running coach that had provided poor advice that resulted in overtraining, all of which led to this
serious injury. She not only has customized a specific program for me and according to all the research I have done
(and I am a researcher by trade), my injury is found in 1% of the population so not an easy program to construct, but encouraged
my plan to work with a sports nutrionist, participated in a second phone consultation when I asked her to speak with my personal
trainer to ensure he was part of the plan, and encouraged me to keep her in the loop several times a day right now as things
are difficult. And she meant it, as I update her, she immediately provides advice and guidance and I am diligent in following
it and now feel like I am finally seeing a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. I am not an easy person to work
with I run a company for a living and am extremely driven and stubborn. Before this happened I had achieved numerous PRs in
my running and was doing 6 hours of intense strength training so to be reduced to barely being able to walk is both mentally
and physically challenging to say the least. I had decided no matter what I would run the Chicago Marathon in October and
had strong-armed my trainer into increasing the level of intensity for our workouts. Janet was amazing in our initial
consultation in having as strong a personality as I do and the knowledge and experience to immediately gain my trust and confidence
in easing up on this marathon goal and taking it one day at a time. I am not out of the woods yet, but I know that if
I continue to follow her advice and fully adopt her program, I will reach my goals of being a stronger, healthier and competitive
runner. (KW, 6/09) "Passionate about what she does" I
have only been working with Janet for a month, but in this short period of time I can see that she is passionate about what
she does. She is super detailed and very knowledgeable. I can honestly say that she is genuinely interested in my training
and my goals. I know I'm not her only client; but she makes me feel like I am, and that is important to me. Thanks Janet!
(J, 6/09) "Running Strong" is also "Walking Strong" in my book.!" I am a walker and I am 70 years old. Last Spring I was shocked when I failed my stress test...I always considered
myself in pretty good condition...although I had cut back on my tennis playing because of a hurt knee....and had added 30
lbs. in 12 years....suddenly my low blood pressure was always elevated. Janet Hamilton set me up with a viable program geared
for success.....walking, stretching, and strengthening. Her program for me was not defeating in its' challenges, but planned
so that the daily routines were varied and addressed all my personal requirements....age,activity level, blood pressure and
heart rate, and my personal goals. I am thrilled with the results from 7 months under Janet's supervision. I have passed another
stress test;lost 25 lbs.; lowered my blood pressure to an acceptable rate; am once again enjoying activity without knee pain
or pain meds. My cardiologist refers to me as his "poster child". Thanks, Janet. (JW, 1/2009) Strength, strength, and more strength! "I
have been working with Janet for over six months. Before I started, I would occasionally go to the gym for weights because
I was afraid of getting too bulky. I had three marathons under my belt, which all required months to a full year to recover.
Janet placed me on a strength and flexibility program along with my running which has worked wonders for me. I recently completed
the San Antonio Marathon and I just can't explain how much energy I have. I'm going into my 3rd post marathon week, and I
feel like I have completely recovered. The last marathons also left me with piriformis syndrome, and I just cannot believe
that I'm not suffering this time. along with the training plans, I have gained a lot of knowledge about training." -
(LM, 11/2008)
Getting to the root of the problem... "Janet's responsiveness and attention to detail are excellent. When
I first started, I thought I would give the long distance coaching a try for a month, a year later and it is a valuable part
of my day. Janet's understanding of the body is outstanding and it often amazes me how she is able to revise/adjust my workout
simply from my notes. I started with Janet because of a chronic ITB problem. After one visit and a few weeks of exercises
on my own, Janet assessed that the root cause of the injury was my back. Previously, I had been through 7 years of PT from
a variety of different sources, nobody ever addressed my back. I am definately on the road to recovery and havent had an ITB
symptom in a year. I do wish I lived closer for more regular face to face check ins but I am thoroughly satisfied with my
training program." (SW, 11/2008)
A knowledgable teacher and motivator... “I
first got introduced to Janet from a friend of mine that asked her a question on her Blog. After several years of a repetitive
shin issue, I contacted Janet and I can honestly say, my life has changed ever since. Her ability to diagnose over the phone
and gather initial historical information was incredible. One would have thought she had my charts from my physical therapist
right in front of her. She was right on target about frustrations and attempts to recover that I had experienced. I had always
dealt with my shin issue from the ground up and Janet changed directions and dealt from the hips down. She’s knowledgeable,
a great teacher, motivated to keep you on the ground and has a true passion for the average athlete. I have been working with
her since Feb.2008 and plan on using her through marathons and recovery. There is a sense of neurosis amongst runners and
she knows exactly how to hold you accountable and keep you smiling along the way. Thanks for making a difference Janet and
making it much easier for me to live with and work with others." (CB - 8/2008)
Supportive, positive,
reliable... "Training
with Janet has changed my approach to running for the better. She taught me to have patience and listen to my body's signals.
Her initial assessment was thorough and she explained her diagnosis and recommendations clearly. Her coaching was supportive,
positive, and reliable." (AA, 11/2008)
Training smarter... "Janet has helped me recover from an Achilles injury
and most recently a back injury. Thanks to Janet's coaching guidance I have learned how important it is to include strength
and stretching as a continuous part of my training routine. Before working with Janet, I would train as hard as possible every
workout and end up with sore muscles and feeling tired. With Janet's training program, I train smarter, never have sore muscles,
and I'm stronger and more flexible." (JP, 11/2008)
A holistic approach... "Janet Hamilton is an invaluable resource for anyone
trying to improve performance, recover from injury or establish sustainable, lifetime fitness. She has a comprehensive knowledge
of physiology and a deep understanding of the psychology of athletes, a combination I never found in countless medical professionals
with whom I consulted over at least ten years. Her holistic approach has enabled me to break the cycle of injuries and tissue
degeneration that I was in after 25 years of running. While I may not be able to recover fully, it would only be because I
didn't meet Janet soon enough." (MS, 11/2008)
Better than pills or drugs... "I have used Janet's coaching
services for a couple of injuries: one is chronic (bad hip) and another achilles injury. Five years ago my hip would
hurt after a long car ride or sitting at work. I had very restricted mobility, and negatively impacted my quality of life.
I went to PT's and had limited success. I found Janet, and after trying her coaching service I flew to Atlanta for Janet to
do an assessment. People thought I was crazy - what could someone from Atlanta do to help me long distance? In any event,
I began to follow her prescribed exercises, many of which are outlined in her book. Fast forward to today and I have a very
different quality of life - I take no pain medication for my hip, and never get sore after a long period of sitting. Frankly,
aside from some small remaining limitations in mobility, it does not affect my life any any way, and have pushed off
a surgery which I will probably need for a many years. My xrays over 6 years since working with Janet (and havent worked directly
for a while now) show no substantial disease progression in my arthritis. I am now playing some ice hockey (the over 40, no
check kind of leauge for full disclosure). I can tell everyone here that to keep it all moving, it requires a lifelong commitment
to her program, but it's no more than 3 times a week for minimum maintenence, and that's better than pills or drugs. Good
luck to all and encourage Janet's services as a coach" T (11/05)
Worth the flight in
for the evaluation... "I can't say enough about this woman! Janet spent the better part of a weekend with me analyzing
my wacky biomechanics. If fact, I flew in from several states away for a one-on-one consultation and I was NOT disappointed.
Not only is she knowledgeable, thorough, and extremely conscientious with follow-up, but she is great to be around--down-to-earth,
fun, empathetic, and gracious! I still have a ways to go in fixing my running issues, but our consultation provided me with
some very valuable clues as to why I'm chronically injured! I highly recommend Janet's services--both "virtual"
and "in person". She has helped me more than any other practitioner--including chiropractor, Orthopedist, Physical
Therapist, and Podiatrist. Most important, Janet addresses all issues related to your biomechanics, even those that aren't
seemingly running-related. Thanks to her holistic approach, she even helped me with my TMJ! Do check Janet out--the sooner,
the better!" - (L, 11/2002) Did
you find the information provided by the coach helpful in understanding your condition and some of the factors that might
have lead up to it?
"Extremely helpful--the dr did not explain any of the surrounding issues or causes,
just told me I'd have to quit running for a while and only suggested orthotics. They ought to make referrals to people
like you!!" - Julia T (Stanford University)
"The rehab coaching services were extremely helpful in furthering my understanding
of my condition and the contributing factors. I learned more from you during one month than I did in 15 months of doctors'
visits." - Sue 1/01
"Absolutely. You were the only one I could find that offered this type of service. Dr's want to x-ray, cut, or give you pills. No one will show you how to stretch, strengthen, and take the
time to assess flexibility, imbalances, etc." - Chris H. 10/00 "Yes. Janet did a very thorough interview prior to the starting the coaching services.
I felt like she had a good grasp of the problems I was
experiencing and she explained to me what she
thought might be the problem(s)." - Martha 1/01
"...you have changed my life. Literally
and completely. When I came to you I was very depressed and in pain. The medical community was of little
help. You put me on the right path, providing not only the tools to improve my condition, but also emotional support. To me,
that's what a great coach does - treat the body and mind." - C. R. 7/00
"Absolutely! The morning we spent together
was particularly helpful in this regard, but also as various minor problems came up your advice in dealing with those helped
me to understand what the underlying cause(s) were" -- B. P. 6/00
"Yes I did find your services helpful in understanding why
I got hurt-just wish that I had found you sooner there then I might not have been out of running for so long." - Sara
G 4/00 "Extremely helpful--the dr did not explain any of the surrounding issues or causes, just told me

you feel that the services provided were worth the cost? "Yes. Janet gave
me a lot of time. She is a professional who is very generous with her expertise. When I was having problems with my Achilles
tendon, Janet even took digital photographs just for me so that I could see how to wrap my foot/ankle properly. I also felt
that the "face to face" was very valuable to me in which Janet tested my flexibility and videotaped my gait which
she showed and explained to me. It was helpful to me to see how I overpronate!" - Martha H. 1/01
Were the instructions for exercises and
returning to training clear and understandable? "Yes, the photographs and instructions on the website were very clear and understandable. Also, in our "face-to-face"
conference, Janet provided help with the exercises." "Janet gave me an electronic training log that she updated
as she felt necessary based on the progress that I was making. She checked on my progress regularly and adjusted the program
as necessary. The log was really great for me to keep me on track and to keep track of my progress or to help diagnose problems."

The latest reviews from the 2007 marathon training program:
Just wanted to let you know that Columbus was very good to me yesterday - I finished in 3:37:57 -- my PR by 18 minutes,
and I qualified for Boston with 7 minutes to spare. Thank you for a great training season!!!Jen (10/07)
Thanks Mike - your training program is really working. I have not run this strong in many years.
I cannot tell you how great that feels. Cannot wait for the next fall challenge :-) Lark (10/07) Just wanted
to give you a big thank you for the advice and support you have provided me the last couple of years. Under some pretty
difficult conditions at Steamtown yesterday (albeit not as brutal as Chicago), I was able to achieve both a PR and a Boston
Qualifying time. My chip time was 3:39:53 and I needed a 3:45. The XMP program, the schedule you set up, and the
personal advice you gave me had a lot to do with my ability to reach my goal. Doyle (10/07) I wanted to
thank you for all of your coaching these last few months. It was an incredible feeling accomplishing the JFK 50.
You're a terrific coach and I'm going to continue singing your praises..... Bernie (11/06) I
didn't have a chance to chat with you last night, but I did want to say that this year was a breakthrough for me.
I took 9 minutes off my marathon time and also had an impressive 5K PR in August. I think how you set the tone of the
program this year was a big contributor to my success. By slowing down the pace groups, I believe you kept me from over-training,
which is what has killed me the past few years. Plus, hearing you say that the schedule is not the gospel helped as
well. Too many people get overwhelmed by the schedule, instead of trying to find their personal balance.
So, thanks Mike. I love the program. I drive up from Alexandria every week to run with the group because I don't
want to find another group closer to home. Joy (11/06) Dear
Mike, Many, many thanks for coaching us all this year! (I know it's kind of early in the marathon season to be giving
thanks, but that's Chicago for you!) This is quite a program you've put together in just a few years. You have
good reason to be proud! Thanks to you, I'm headed to Boston! You might not get 100% of the credit (other coaches, fellow
runners, and a little bit of hard work were also involved >;) but I must say that having such a well-organized, structured
program transformed an enormous challenge into a fun, fun journey. It has been a blast, and circumstances allowing it, I plan
to be back next year. Many thanks again! Andre (10/04)
Wanted to personally thank you again for the program
you and Pam set up. You guys all so generously volunteer of your time and energy. So, I am in a state of disbelief that I
actually qualified for Boston. I'm just disappointed that the heat so badly affected everyone else, it is kind of hard
to be happy about my time when so many others felt devastated. I was embarassed when folks asked yesterday to even tell them
my time. I never dreamed I could ever run as fast. This program did wonders for my athletic self-esteem, and I know others
feel the same way. Again, you must be sick of the pats on the back, but big one from me. Deb (11/04)

wanted to give you a pat on the back and let you know that this training program is REALLY working for me. After several years
of stagnant running (which have included NO revolutions on the track), my times have really dropped lately. I'm running
much faster at a much easier effort. I set a PR this weekend at the Quantico half-marathon. Finished in 1:33:10. I know
several others also had PRs. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the marathon to see if I can sustain things. For what it's
worth, I haven't PRd in any race in over 6 years!! Thanks for all of your efforts! --DAN (9/05)
Mike
- Let me say thanks again for welcoming me into the XMP program this summer, even though I was attempting my first marathon.
I had some doubts that I'd be able to try a marathon after getting injured at the end of August. As I tapered these past
couple of weeks, I wondered if my training was adequate and if I'd be able to finish the NCR trail marathon. As it turns
out I ran conservatively over the first half this morning and was feeling just fine well past 20 miles. Miles 25 and
26 were very tough with the last one entirely uphill, but I managed to finish in 3:36:40 (1:48:37/1:48:03). I just looked
at the results this evening and see that I finished 83rd (and passed 36 people in the second half - about 15% of the field).
I really appreciate all your advice, especially in the past 3-4 weeks about workouts and tapering. I would not have made it
without your counsel. Thank you. Bill (11/05)
Hi Mike, I finished the Marine Corp Marathon, (MCM) that was my major goal. I was not the fastest runner, but at the
end of the race, I was not exhausted and I had not injured myself. I am in better shape. My training was fantastic. I am very
pleased with my performance. Next year I will do better. Mike, you have an excellent training program. I appreciate your help,
advice and guidance. Best regards, Darryl (11/05)
Its interesting. I tied my PR, ran hard, but this is
the first marathon EVER that I was drug-free. I didn't take any advil, which I usualy do for ITs and other assorted pains.
I really think that is a reflection of the weight-training. This is the first time that I have actively weight trained my
legs. Thanks for dragging us to Philbins and making us run those god-awful workouts! (10/05)
Coach Mike, I can't thank you enough for all the effort you put into organizing the Experienced Marathoners
program, training us, and then supporting us throughout the race season. I look forward to your continued leadership! Much
thanks, Sarah B. (11/05)
