NYC Marathon, NYC

Here's what our clients are saying...

"I have used Janet's coaching services for a couple of injuries: one is chronic (bad hip) and another achilles injury. Five years ago my hip would hurt after a long car ride or sitting at work. I had very restricted mobility, and negatively impacted my quality of life. I went to PT's and had limited success. I found Janet, and after trying her coaching service I flew to Atlanta for Janet to do an assessment. People thought I was crazy - what could someone from Atlanta do to help me long distance? In any event,  I began to follow her prescribed exercises, many of which are outlined in her book. Fast forward to today and I have a very different quality of life - I take no pain medication for my hip, and never get sore after a long period of sitting. Frankly, aside from some small remaining limitations in mobility, it does not affect my life any any way, and have pushed off a surgery which I will probably need for a many years. My xrays over 6 years since working with Janet (and havent worked directly for a while now) show no substantial disease progression in my arthritis. I am now playing some ice hockey (the over 40, no check kind of leauge for full disclosure). I can tell everyone here that to keep it all moving, it requires a lifelong commitment to her program, but it's no more than 3 times a week for minimum maintenence, and that's better than pills or drugs. Good luck to all and encourage Janet's services as a coach"       T (11/05)

"I can't say enough about this woman! Janet spent the better part of a weekend with me analyzing my wacky biomechanics. If fact, I flew in from several states away for a one-on-one consultation and I was NOT disappointed. Not only is she knowledgeable, thorough, and extremely conscientious with follow-up, but she is great to be around--down-to-earth, fun, empathetic, and gracious! I still have a ways to go in fixing my running issues, but our consultation provided me with some very valuable clues as to why I'm chronically injured! I highly recommend Janet's services--both "virtual" and "in person". She has helped me more than any other practitioner--including chiropractor, Orthopedist, Physical Therapist, and Podiatrist. Most important, Janet addresses all issues related to your biomechanics, even those that aren't seemingly running-related. Thanks to her holistic approach, she even helped me with my TMJ! Do check Janet out--the sooner, the better!" - Laura (Cleveland)  11/02

Did you find the information provided by the coach helpful in understanding your condition and some of the factors that might have lead up to it?

"Extremely helpful--the dr did not explain any of the surrounding issues or causes, just told me I'd have to quit running for a while and only suggested orthotics.  They ought to make referrals to people like you!!" - Julia T (Stanford University)

"The rehab coaching services were extremely helpful in furthering my understanding of my condition and the contributing factors. I learned more from you during one month than I did in 15 months of doctors' visits."  - Sue  1/01

"Absolutely. You were the only one I could find that offered this type of service. Dr's want to x-ray, cut, or give you pills. No one will show you how to stretch, strengthen, and take the time to assess flexibility, imbalances, etc."  - Chris H. 10/00

"Yes. Janet did a very thorough interview prior to the starting the coaching services. I felt like she had a good grasp of the problems I was experiencing and she explained to me what she thought might be the problem(s)." - Martha  1/01

"...you have changed my life. Literally and completely. When I came to you I was very depressed and in pain. The medical community was of little help. You put me on the right path, providing not only the tools to improve my condition, but also emotional support. To me, that's what a great coach does - treat the body and mind." - C. R. 7/00

"Absolutely! The morning we spent together was particularly helpful in this regard, but also as various minor problems came up your advice in dealing with those helped me to understand what the underlying cause(s) were" --  B. P. 6/00

"Yes I did find your services helpful in understanding why I got hurt-just wish that I had found you sooner there then I might not have been out of running for so long." - Sara  G 4/00

Did you feel that the services provided were worth the cost?

"Yes. Janet gave me a lot of time. She is a professional who is very generous with her expertise. When I was having problems with my Achilles tendon, Janet even took digital photographs just for me so that I could see how to wrap my foot/ankle properly. I also felt that the "face to face" was very valuable to me in which Janet tested my flexibility and videotaped my gait which she showed and explained to me. It was helpful to me to see how I overpronate!" - Martha H.  1/01

Were the instructions for exercises and returning to training clear and understandable?
"Yes, the photographs and instructions on the website were very clear and understandable. Also, in our "face-to-face" conference, Janet provided help with the exercises." "Janet gave me an electronic training log that she updated as she felt necessary based on the progress that I was making. She checked on my progress regularly and adjusted the program as necessary. The log was really great for me to keep me on track and to keep track of my progress or to help diagnose problems." - Martha H 1/01

"...the web site pictures and explanations were very helpful and I have continued to refer back to them to check that I am continuing to do them correctly. There were a few times when I had trouble understanding the worksheet but you were always able to help me understand what you intended through e-mail." - Bob P. 6/00

Feedback from Mike's marathon training clinics

The latest reviews from the 2007 marathon training program:

Just wanted to let you know that Columbus was very good to me yesterday - I finished in 3:37:57 -- my PR by 18 minutes, and I qualified for Boston with 7 minutes to spare.  Thank you for a great training season!!!Jen  (10/07)

Thanks Mike - your training program is really working.  I have not run this strong in many years.  I cannot tell you how great that feels. Cannot wait for the next fall challenge :-)

Lark (10/07)

Just wanted to give you a big thank you for the advice and support you have provided me the last couple of years.  Under some pretty difficult conditions at Steamtown yesterday (albeit not as brutal as Chicago), I was able to achieve both a PR and a Boston Qualifying time.  My chip time was 3:39:53 and I needed a 3:45.  The XMP program, the schedule you set up, and the personal advice you gave me had a lot to do with my ability to reach my goal.

I wanted to thank you for all of your coaching these last few months.  It was an incredible feeling accomplishing the JFK 50.  You're a terrific coach and I'm going to continue singing your praises.....

Bernie  (11/06)

I didn't have a chance to chat with you last night, but I did want to say that this year was a breakthrough for me.  I took 9 minutes off my marathon time and also had an impressive 5K PR in August.  I think how you set the tone of the program this year was a big contributor to my success.  By slowing down the pace groups, I believe you kept me from over-training, which is what has killed me the past few years.  Plus, hearing you say that the schedule is not the gospel helped as well.  Too many people get overwhelmed by the schedule, instead of trying to find their personal balance.  So, thanks Mike.  I love the program. I drive up from Alexandria every week to run with the group because I don't want to find another group closer to home.

Dear Mike,
Many, many thanks for coaching us all this year! (I know it's kind of early in the marathon season to be giving thanks, but that's Chicago for you!)
This is quite a program you've put together in just a few years. You have good reason to be proud! Thanks to you, I'm headed to Boston! You might not get 100% of the credit (other coaches, fellow runners, and a little bit of hard work were also involved >;) but I must say that having such a well-organized, structured program transformed an enormous challenge into a fun, fun journey. It has been a blast, and circumstances allowing it, I plan to be back next year.
Many thanks again!
Andre (10/04)

Wanted to personally thank you again for the program you and Pam set up. You guys all so generously volunteer of your time and energy. So, I am in a state of disbelief that I actually qualified for Boston. I'm just disappointed that the heat so badly affected everyone else, it is kind of hard to be happy about my time when so many others felt devastated. I was embarassed when folks asked yesterday to even tell them my time. I never dreamed I could ever run as fast. This program did wonders for my athletic self-esteem, and I know others feel the same way.
Again, you must be sick of the pats on the back, but big one from me.

Mike:
Just wanted to give you a pat on the back and let you know that this training program is REALLY working for me. After several years of stagnant running (which have included NO revolutions on the track), my times have really dropped lately. I'm running much faster at a much easier effort.
I set a PR this weekend at the Quantico half-marathon. Finished in 1:33:10. I know several others also had PRs. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the marathon to see if I can sustain things. For what it's worth, I haven't PRd in any race in over 6 years!!
Thanks for all of your efforts!

Mike -
Let me say thanks again for welcoming me into the XMP program this summer, even though I was attempting my first marathon. I had some doubts that I'd be able to try a marathon after getting injured at the end of August. As I tapered these past couple of weeks, I wondered if my training was adequate and if I'd be able to finish the NCR trail marathon. As it turns out I ran conservatively over the first half this morning and was feeling just fine well past 20 miles. Miles 25 and  26 were very tough with the last one entirely uphill, but I managed to finish in 3:36:40 (1:48:37/1:48:03). I just looked at the results this evening and see that I finished 83rd (and passed 36 people in the second half - about 15% of the field). I really appreciate all your advice, especially in the past 3-4 weeks about workouts and tapering. I would not have made it without your counsel.
Thank you.

Hi Mike,
I finished the Marine Corp Marathon, (MCM) that was my major goal. I was not the fastest runner, but at the end of the race, I was not exhausted and I had not injured myself. I am in better shape. My training was fantastic. I am very pleased with my performance. Next year I will do better. Mike, you have an excellent training program. I appreciate your help, advice and guidance.
Best regards,
Darryl (11/05)

Its interesting. I tied my PR, ran hard, but this is the first marathon EVER that I was drug-free. I didn't take any advil, which I usualy do for ITs and other assorted pains. I really think that is a reflection of the weight-training. This is the first time that I have actively weight trained my legs. Thanks for dragging us to Philbins and making us run those god-awful workouts!
(10/05)

Coach Mike,
I can't thank you enough for all the effort you put into organizing the Experienced Marathoners program, training us, and then supporting us throughout the race season. I look forward to your continued leadership! Much thanks,
Sarah B. (11/05)
